Spain was granted Louisiana from France because of their lack of Florida. A large portion of the Florida inhabitants left, taking along massive portions of the remaining indigenous inhabitants with them to Cuba. The British soon constructed the King’s Road connecting St. Augustine to Georgia. The street crossed the St. Johns River at a narrow point referred to as Wacca Pilatka, or the British name “Cow Ford”, reflecting the reality that cattle had been introduced throughout the river there. The geographical space of Spanish claims in La Florida diminished with the institution of English settlements to the north and French claims to the west.
